I never knew anything about natural hair growing up. I just knew I had extremely long and thick hair and my mother always complained about blow drying and hot pressing it until she started relaxing my hair at about age 8 or 9 (not really sure of the exact age but I know I was in grade school.) Even after the relaxers, I still had long thick hair, but as I got older and started experimenting with my hair and wearing different braids styles which eventually damaged my hair; I had to start the growth process all over every few years. My hair never reached its full potential length past bra strap length, but it always remained a nice long length. I knew nothing about maintaining my hair or that I could go relaxer free and neither did all the people that I let mess with my hair(shame on them...LOL) But once I discovered Salon Delta Hair Salon, Naylan helped me explore my natural inner beauty. Soon after I began to research about natural hair and it was a wrap after that. That's when my BC (Big Chop) soon followed. When you first chopped, what were your thoughts and feelings? How do you feel now? When I first chopped, I wasn't worried much because the very next day I had an appointment scheduled to get my hair braided. I wore my hair in protective styles for 5 months; I never had my hair cut that short so I was very insecure about revealing my hair at that length. Now that my hair has gained some length I'm able to reveal it to the world. But initially I still had to get over the shock of having short hair. As time went on I got used to the shortness of my hair. How did you cope with the responses from your family and friends?Naylan was very supportive. Naylan and the other stylists even participated in my BC celebration which included cupcakes and picture taking(and that meant a lot to me because that was a wayfor me to remember my most important hair milestone. They didn't even laugh at me (at least not in my face..lol) Now my family's reaction was totally different, they thought I was crazy. My husband hated the BC and said I looked like a boy. My mother and sister made nappy jokes when I told them I was doing the BC, but once I sent them pics after the BC they both actually said it looked nice. When I told them I didn't plan on straightening my hair they thought I truly had lost it. I was shocked for my mother to feel this way since she is natural although she straightens her hair. They were so against the idea of me not straightening my hair. When and why did you decide to go natural?I decided to go natural shortly after moving to Dallas, TX subsequent to a horrible relaxer experience from a recommended stylist. So, I searched the web for a potential new stylist and that's when I came across Naylan's salon. She educated me about transitioning and going natural. So, I started the transition process soon after. It's been 12 months 3 weeks and 6 days since my last relaxer and 5 months and 1 week and 3 days since my BC.What are your fave products and hair tools? I love all Mizani products, Givonaani Direct Leave in conditioner(Co-wash), DevaCurl Pre-poo shampoo(use after coming out of a protective style), HEHH (Herbal Essesnce Hello Hydration), Kera Care (set my twists) and Curls Souffle (refresh my twists).As for as the hair tools, I love the tangle teezer (use after taking my hair out of a protective style), quidad double detangler comb(use in the shower) and denman brush(use for detangling and styling).What are your staple styles? Anything consisting of twists or twist-outs. Do you have any hair goals? If so, what steps are you taking to achieve them?I would like for my hair to grow past bra strap length again. I'm learning my hair and taking better care of it each day. Something I'm doing now that I never did before is that I'm proactively involved in the maintenance and growth of my hair. Anything else you would like to add...I'm so glad that I discovered this salon and that I met Naylan because if I had not met Naylan I would still be getting scalp burns and I would know nothing about what my hair likes and doesn't like.
